May 21st Speakers Series Event: “Stories Untold: Finding Artistic Inspiration Through Historical Research”

Join us for our next Speakers Series event from 5:00-6:30 p.m. on May 21, 2015 at the California State Archives. Artist Monica Lundy will highlight her work during her presentation entitled “Stories Untold: Finding Artistic Inspiration Through Historical Research.”

Guided by an interest in deepening one’s understanding of place, Monica Lundy incorporates historical research into her studio practice. Her curiosity about lesser-known histories is paired with her curiosity about unconventional painting practices. Lundy’s mixed-media paintings traverse painting and installation, abstraction and figuration. The work ruminates on the dispossessed, collective memory, and the corrosive nature of time.

Lundy holds a MFA from Mills College in painting and a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in sculpture. She has been awarded the Jay DeFeo Prize, San Francisco Arts Commission Grant and Montalvo Arts Center’s Irvine Fellowship. She has done site specific work on Alcatraz Island, Fort Point, and other locations around the San Francisco Bay Area. Her work has been featured in ARTNews, the Huffington Post, Visual Art Source, and the San Francisco Chronicle, and other publications. Lundy is represented by Toomey Tourell Fine Art in San Francisco. She currently lives and works in Oakland, California.

The California State Archives is conveniently located one block south of the State Capitol at 1020 O Street in downtown Sacramento.
